Visual Paragraph: Heathcliff VS. Edgar Linton
Quotes
I choose to use the phrase, “tug-of-war” to describe the relationship between Edgar Linton and Heathcliff because I feel like it really summarizes their attitude towards one another. The first quote I used was said by Catherine, “To-day, Edgar Linton has asked me to marry him,” (Bronte 79) Linton proposed to Catherine and by doing this, he is taking his relationship with Catherine to the next level. This gives Linton a strong pull on the figurative rope he and Heathcliff are pulling for Catherine’s love for them. Heathcliff and Catherine never had a real relationship while Edgar has the upper-hand now by making Catherine his wife. The other quote I used to prove my point, was said by Heathcliff himself, “Every thought she spends on Linton she spends a thousand on me!” (Bronte 146) This represents the “tug-of-war” between him and Edgar Linton because he is always trying to one-up Linton. He keeps trying to emphasize that Catherine loves him more than Linton and he is better than him.

Since my phrase was “tug-of-war,” I decided to draw Edgar Linton and Heathcliff both pulling on a heart which says, “Cathy’s love” in opposite directions. I felt this would be appropriate to draw because instead of a rope, Linton and Heathcliff are pulling on Catherine Linton’s heart, both trying to win her love. Catherine’s “heart” is slowly tearing away because of the two men in her life desperately trying to win her over.
